Tympan Pictures makes films about history. This page says plainly what our work is and is not, so that no one mistakes a drama for a document. It applies to the Site, to Đại Cồ Việt, and to every trailer, image, text and post we publish.
Đại Cồ Việt is a work of historical fiction. It is inspired by events of the tenth and eleventh centuries, but it is not a documentary, a textbook or a scholarly work.
To tell a story we invent and compress: dialogue, private thoughts, relationships, motives, composite or minor characters, places, timelines and the order of events. Where the record is silent we imagine. Where it conflicts, we choose a reading or show several.
Please do not rely on our work as a source of historical fact. For facts, consult the primary sources and scholarship.
The surviving sources are few, were written later, and are often partisan. Historians disagree, for example about the circumstances of the events of 979 and about the death of Lê Long Đĩnh in 1009.
Where accounts compete, the Site and the series set them side by side (the official chronicle, folk history, later hypotheses, evidence on the ground) and label each as what it is. Showing a view is not endorsing it. No account is presented as confirmed fact unless we say so.
Historical figures are portrayed through artistic interpretation. We know of no authenticated contemporary portraits of them: faces, costume and bearing are imagined. We do not intend to defame, glorify or demean any historical person, dynasty, government, religion, or ethnic or national group.
Antagonists are characters in a story, not statements about any people. Violence, betrayal and wrongdoing are shown because they are part of the story, not because we approve of them.
The series is set in the tenth and eleventh centuries. It takes no position on any present-day political, territorial, maritime, religious or nationalist dispute, and must not be read as a statement on such matters by Tympan Pictures, BrainiacMinds or anyone connected with them.
We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or speaking for any government, political party, state body or religious organisation. Names of states and dynasties are used in their historical sense: for example “Song” for the Song dynasty, and “Đại Cồ Việt” for the realm so named from 968.
We make no claim about the ancestry, legitimacy, character or conduct of any modern family, clan, community, place or institution, or about any connection between them and the people depicted. Any resemblance to a living person is coincidental.
Our images and video are made with generative AI tools under human creative direction, and we say so on every end card and on the Site. They are illustrations, not photographs or archival footage. Likenesses are fictional and are not intended to portray any real, living person.
AI-generated imagery can contain imperfections or anachronisms in costume, architecture, weapons or geography. We aim for fidelity, but we do not guarantee it.
The series deals with war, political murder and betrayal, and may not be suitable for children. Viewer discretion is advised.
Information on the Site is provided for general interest, without warranty of accuracy or completeness. We are not liable for decisions made in reliance on it. Our Terms of Use also apply.
We want to get things right. If you are a historian, a descendant, a member of a community, or simply a viewer, and you believe something is inaccurate or hurtful, write to hello@tympanpictures.com with the page, what concerns you, and any sources you can share.
We read every message and answer in good faith. We correct clear factual errors on the Site. Where something is a deliberate creative choice, we may keep it and will explain why where we can. We do not engage with abuse or threats.
Comments, posts and reactions by others on YouTube or social platforms are their own views and do not represent us. We may remove or restrict content on our own channels that is unlawful, abusive, or incites hatred or violence, and we ask for respectful discussion.
The names of historical persons and places belong to shared history. “Tympan Pictures” and the Tympan mark are ours; other names and trademarks belong to their owners. Our reference to the Đông Sơn bronze drum honours a shared cultural heritage: our mark is an original interpretation, and we claim no ownership of that heritage.
