968: the end of the Twelve Warlords
In 968 Đinh Bộ Lĩnh ended the Twelve Warlords and named the realm Đại Cồ Việt. The record gives a sentence; the series builds a season from the silence.
Places
Hoa Lư is where the series begins and the realm is assembled: the caves, the feast of 979, the robe of 980 — and the capital the move of 1010 leaves behind.

The project's own shorthand is a line with an arrow in it: Hoa Lư → Thăng Long. Everything the series dramatises happens at one end or the other of that arrow, and Hoa Lư is the end it starts from. The tagline makes the same move in words: before Thăng Long there was blood, betrayal, and a question no one could answer. This page is about the place that comes before the before.
The site's published record is thin on place, in a way that matters. Hoa Lư appears in the Season I summary as the base from which Đinh Bộ Lĩnh wins over one rival and crushes another: the caves of Hoa Lư, in the series' phrasing. It appears again in the timeline: the feast night of 979, when Đinh Tiên Hoàng and Đinh Liễn are murdered in the palace courtyard. It appears in the first teaser, which is set there in 980 — a child on the throne, a dowager empress, a general, and a robe that changes hands.
What the record does not give is a description. There is no entry in the published material about the town's size, its walls, its gates, its river or its streets. The site's timeline is a list of years, not a gazetteer. That absence is the first thing to say about Hoa Lư.
The arrow in the shorthand is also a sequence. Hoa Lư is where the realm is named in 968, where the court is attacked in 979, where the robe is laid on Lê Hoàn's shoulders in 980, and where the war of 981 is decided from. The site's season ranges follow the same order: Season I is 966–968, Season II is 979–981, Season III is 1005–1010. The move to Đại La happens at the very end, in 1010.
So Hoa Lư is not one location among many: it holds the first three decades of the story, and the project's shorthand names the two capitals in order. Calling it “the capital before Thăng Long” is not a metaphor; it is the site's own chronology.
The season summary says caves. The episode list offers a title, “High Walls, Deep Moats”, that points at fortification. Neither is a chronicle entry. The series uses the caves as the look of Đinh Bộ Lĩnh's base and the title as a way of signalling that this is a defended place; the record the site publishes does not describe defensive works at Hoa Lư, and this page does not supply them.
That distinction matters because place names invite invention. A page could describe the limestone, the rivers and the roads as if the chronicle had recorded them; it has not. What it recorded is what happened there.
The site does not stage competing readings of Hoa Lư the way it stages four readings of Long Đĩnh's death. There is no panel of historians arguing about the capital's merits. The place is presented as a fact of the chronology and a setting for events, not a proposition to be tested.
Two readings are nevertheless visible in the material, and the site leaves both standing. The first is simply that Hoa Lư was the base of the winning warlord, and became the capital because its owner became king. The second is that a capital is defined by what happens in it: the founding, the feast, the robe, the war. The series leans on the second — its Hoa Lư is a place of rooms, courts and decisions — but it does not claim the first is wrong, because the record does not settle it.
Everything in this section is hư cấu — invention — and is labelled as such.
Because the series is a story about a move. The Edict on the Transfer of the Capital is the last thing the project stages, and it is only meaningful if there is somewhere to move from. Hoa Lư gives 1010 its direction: the document is read against the place left behind. The series' full trailer promises the dawn over the Đại La wharf; before that dawn, there is this.
The record's Hoa Lư is an address in a list of years. The series turns it into a place with weather and rooms, and then says so. That is the same method as everywhere else on this site: keep the entries, imagine the walls, and keep the label on the imagining.
